Dedication to Dance,
Surrendering to the Divine
Founder & Artistic Director
Senior Disciple of Dr Vasundhara Doraswamy & Smt. Meghala Bhat
Devoted to imparting Bharatanatyam in its purest form and preserving timeless traditions through the Guru-Shishya Parampara.
Our classes are conducted in a mixed-age learning environment, reflecting the traditional Guru-Shishya Parampara through which Indian classical arts have long been taught and preserved.
This gives younger students the opportunity to observe senior students, absorb technique naturally, and develop confidence, discipline, and strong foundational understanding within a nurturing environment.
Intermediate students continue refining their foundations while guiding younger students, cultivating leadership, responsibility, musicality, and precision in their practice.
All students learn within a supportive, inspiring, and family-like atmosphere — a modern Gurukula grounded in respect, tradition, discipline, and artistic growth.
Each student progresses at their own pace, with guidance tailored to their stage of learning, personal development, and evolving artistic journey. Classes incorporate both practical training and theoretical learning, allowing students to develop a well-rounded understanding of Bharatanatyam.
Students are provided with theory notes for ongoing reference and study, within a structured curriculum designed to support long-term artistic growth, performance opportunities, and continued progression in their training journey.
The Vasundhara Bani
The Vasundhara Style (also referred to as the Vasundhara Bani) is a respected tradition of Bharatanatyam pioneered by Guru Dr. Vasundhara Doraswamy of Mysore, India. It represents a deeply rooted classical approach shaped by decades of artistic practice, research, and performance.
Pioneer of the Vasundhara Bani · Mysore, India
A pioneering Bharatanatyam artist, choreographer, and guru with over seven decades of contribution to the field. She has performed and taught internationally, and has been recognised with numerous honours including the Central Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (2019) along with several national and international distinctions.
Her work bridges practice, research, and pedagogy, including a PhD exploring the correlation between Yoga and Bharatanatyam. Her multidisciplinary background also includes Kalarippayattu and Tang-ta, enriching her movement vocabulary and artistic depth.
Trained in the Pandanallur tradition, she developed a distinctive artistic approach through years of exploration and refinement, evolving into a refined and expressive contemporary classical form.
Senior Guru and Practitioner of the Vasundhara Bani
Smt. Meghala Hirasave is a senior Bharatanatyam practitioner, teacher, and Yoga exponent, and an important torchbearer of the Vasundhara Bani tradition. Trained directly under Guru Dr. Vasundhara Doraswamy, she continues to uphold and transmit the principles of this lineage through her teaching, practice, and mentorship.
Meghala has presented solo performances at various venues and cultural festivals in India and Australia — including a performance at the Victorian State Parliament marking Indian Independence Day. She served as founding Secretary and Advisor for Dance in FIMDV from 2010–2013.
Through her teaching, she has guided numerous students in developing strong technical foundations alongside a deeper understanding of Bharatanatyam as a disciplined classical art form.
Founder & Artistic Director · Natya Samarpan Academy
A senior disciple of Dr. Vasundhara Doraswamy and Smt. Meghala Hirasave, Tanvi carries forward the legacy of the Vasundhara Style in Melbourne's West. She completed her Arangetram in 2014 and has since continued advanced training, deepening her practice in both technique and expressive artistry.
As the Founder and Artistic Director of Natya Samarpan Academy of Bharatanatyam, she is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of dancers through structured, disciplined, and tradition-rooted training.
Notable performances include Guru Vandana — a solo presentation at the 41st National Vasundharaotsav in Mysore — and a Bharatanatyam–Kathak collaborative production exploring classical dialogue between traditions. She was a featured performer in "Confluence of Indian Classical Dances", a landmark collaborative production presented to welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Melbourne at Marvel Stadium. The performance united 18 Indian classical dance schools from across Melbourne, bringing together exponents of Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Mohiniyattam, Odissi, and Kathak in a celebration of India's diverse classical dance heritage.
Also trained in Western classical flute and Hindustani classical sitar, Tanvi's deep connection to music informs her approach to dance, allowing rhythm, melody, and expression to flow seamlessly into movement.
Weekly classes across Melbourne
Weekly Bharatanatyam classes are currently offered across multiple locations in Melbourne, welcoming students of all ages and experience levels.
Our training follows a structured term system, with each term running for 10 weeks in alignment with the school calendar, followed by a 2-week break. Masterclass sessions are conducted periodically by visiting gurus and practitioners within the Bharatanatyam tradition. Students are expected to attend these sessions as an integral part of their training.
Choosing a Bharatanatyam class often depends on what you are hoping to gain from the learning journey. Different dance programs can vary significantly in their approach. Some focus on fusion styles, general movement, or short-term performance experiences, while others are rooted in a traditional classical syllabus with an emphasis on technique, discipline, musicality, and the Guru–Shishya Parampara through which classical art is passed on.
It can be helpful to reflect on your long-term intention — whether it is casual exposure to dance, stage performance opportunities, fitness and creative movement, or a deeper, structured engagement with a classical art form and its progression over time.
At Natya Samarpan Academy, we focus on the purity and integrity of Bharatanatyam as a classical art form, with structured training that develops strong foundations, discipline, and long-term artistic growth within a traditional learning framework.
Our classes are designed for children aged 5 and above. This minimum age ensures that students are developmentally ready to engage in a structured group learning environment, where focus, discipline, and foundational technique are introduced in a gradual and supportive way.
From age 5 onwards, children are able to fully participate in the rhythm of class, observe peers, and begin building the physical and mental discipline that classical Bharatanatyam training requires.
No prior dance experience is required to join. Our structured curriculum is designed to begin from the very foundations of Bharatanatyam, guiding students step by step through technique, theory, and the cultural and expressive meaning behind the art form.
Students are introduced gradually to core principles, including basic movement vocabulary, rhythm, and selected Sanskrit shlokas, along with their meaning and context, ensuring a well-rounded understanding from the very beginning of their learning journey.
Our training is focused on maintaining high artistic and technical standards, with performance opportunities introduced as an integral part of the learning journey. In the early stages, students are given opportunities to participate in our annual chamber concerts, allowing them to experience performance in a supportive and intimate environment.
As students progress, performance becomes a natural extension of their training. However, Bharatanatyam is approached here as a lifelong discipline rather than a pursuit of immediate stage outcomes. Emphasis is placed on steady growth, depth of understanding, and the gradual development of confidence, technique, and artistic maturity over time.
To enrol, we recommend first getting in touch to arrange a trial class. This allows students to experience the learning environment, class structure, and teaching approach before beginning formal enrolment. Following the trial class, enrolment details and available class options will be shared based on suitability and availability.
Students are required to wear comfortable, modest attire suitable for structured classical dance training. This includes a comfortable kurta with leggings, along with a dupatta. This ensures ease of movement while maintaining the discipline and respect appropriate for a classical learning environment.
Senior or more advanced students are encouraged to wear practise sarees, supporting their progression in technique, posture, and traditional presentation as they develop further in their training.
We follow a structured curriculum designed to provide students with a holistic and disciplined education in Bharatanatyam. The training emphasises strong foundations in technique, rhythm, expression, theory, and the cultural context of the art form, in alignment with traditional learning principles commonly followed in established classical dance institutions in India and globally.
As students progress through their journey, this structured approach provides a strong foundation that can support further study and participation in recognised external examinations. In addition, internal assessments are conducted at the end of each year, offering students clear milestones, constructive feedback, and opportunities to reflect on their growth within a supportive and structured learning environment.
